Feed My Starving Children![]() Volunteers needed to plan and implement the next Feed My Starving Children event to be held on March 1, 2014 in Asbury Hall
Thanks to all of you who prayed for this event and for those who donated change through the family banks, donated money to the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) Rail offering and donated funds on the day of the packing event for Feed My Starving Children held in Asbury on March 17. If you were at the packing event, you know what a joyous time it is to be preparing food for starving children in the US and around the world in the name of Jesus. His spirit was among the 500 who donated their time on this wondrous day and the many volunteers who made this event happen.
The current FMSC steering committee is seeking to mentor some new volunteers to assist us in planning and implementing the 3rd packing event planned for March 1, 2014.
Except for a few on the steering committee, most of us are over 60 and many are pushing 70 years of age! We need some younger folks to take the reins of this event and we will mentor you and be by your side through the next packing event. If you are interested, please e-mail tina.olson@asu.edu. I want to extend heartfelt thanks and special appreciation to the steering committee members, the majority of who have served for two events and plan to do so again for the event on March 1, 2014. One of the most difficult jobs is overseeing the logistics for the set-up and breakdown of the equipment used for this event-the person so willing to do this is Steven Haehl and what a wonderful job he does. And Suzanne Haehl, Steve’s wife, was in charge of finding volunteers to check in the 500 registrants and making samples of the food to share with those attending---great job, Suzanne! Additionally, Steven and Suzanne planned a profitable and fun square dance in Asbury. Doug Dunipace chaired the fundraising committee with Jessie and Jo Ann Ary, and Hud and Jill Huddleston. What a productive effort they made with contacting donors who gave generously enough to provide seed money for the next event in 2014. Bill and Sandy Highsmith and Ron and Pam McKee handed out fliers for weeks and accepted the family bank change and change via a big water jar that raised awareness for the event and brought in hundreds of dollars. We hope the family banks were a blessing to those who used them. Additionally, Ron, ensured timely marketing of our event—thanks so much, Ron—while Bob Bailes copied 80 DVDs to be sent to church and community groups. Pat Barnes and Marie Garber wrote letters to churches in our District and neighborhood which resulted in at least 100 registrants—thank you so much for your generous time. Colleen McManus and her son, Evan, provided beautiful music for the Christmas FMSC fundraiser that raised $1500! Colleen and Evan are so incredibly talented; thank you so very much. Our wonderful Brent Hildyard ensured we had a forklift, without which there would be no FMSC event! Ellen Gilbert and Gail Edwards constructed the amazing signage for the day of the event so everyone could find where they supposed to be! Yay! Saul and Erika Grajales were wonderful additions to our committee as were Art and Martha Sheffield who arranged for the fashion show at our Christmas fundraiser. Larry Olson managed the on-line registration without missing a beat; thank you, Larry. And Harold McCracken served as our DJ at the event. Additionally, all the steering committee members had team members working with them who are too numerous to mention but we are thankful for all of the behind-the scenes volunteers. The church staff and pastors were involved with the production of fliers, accounting for donations, referring callers to us and communicating to the congregation why we wanted to do this event. In 2012, 175 people who attended the packing event were FUMC members and about 300 were from the community; we expect this same statistic when the registrants are tallied. So, we were sharing God’s love with many non- First members. In 2010, we packed 100,000 meals and in 2012, we packed 109,000 meals due to the blessings of this committee, our church members and staff, the Foundation and First United Methodist Women. This year’s meals went to the Philippines where thousands of children are starving. Thank you for sharing your gifts!
So, if there are any endeavors mentioned above that you would like to help us with for the 2014 event, please e-mail Tina Olson at tina.olson@asu.edu.
